Who We Are

Marine Spring has almost two decades of experience developing highly effective teams and successful executives, first working in a corporate environment in France at the Accor Group, an international hospitality company, then coming to the United States and establishing her own consulting firm, Drop of Light, in New York. She is now located in Tucson, AZ. What makes Marine's perspective unique is her experience with golf on a personal and professional level.

Like many business executives Marine began playing golf as a break from the pressures of high-powered work. And, like many self-driven professionals, as she played more she expected more of herself; her competitive nature was making it hard for her to just enjoy the game of golf. In her work as a consultant and coach to upper echelon executives Marine always emphasized how important it was for them to try to find fun and pleasure in what they did, yet she wasn't even following her own advice.

Marine was fortunate to have found a great golf coach who put up with her temper tantrums; who just quietly went about the business of teaching her about the game. Not just how to swing the clubs, but how to play the whole game of golf.

The idea for this book came to life on a day when she heard her coach saying exactly what she had been telling her own consulting clients. On that particular day, the issue her coach was discussing was the importance of making a decision and sticking with it. As she listened to her coach, Marine became acutely aware of the many strong parallels that exist between good golf and good leadership. Realizing that the game of golf was actually a great school to develop talented leaders, Marine began to approach golf on a different, more analytical and metaphorical, level. And she began to use it in her consulting.

From 2001 to 2003, Marine took advantage of the flexibility of being a consultant to follow a dream. She decided to broaden her golf knowledge by going to work as a caddy on the LPGA tour. Being on the inside week after week, watching the best golfers in the world, was a perfect laboratory to explore the parallels between good golf and good leadership skills. She realized that the best LPGA money earners were not always the most talented players; they were the ones who understood the importance of a positive, constructive outlook and great course management.

As she traveled with the tour, it became obvious to Marine that spirit and attitude are what create the momentum to win or lose. A personal belief system, the relationship you have with your own results, and the way you see yourself, all have a greater impact on a golf score than a perfect swing. And so it is with leadership: the right attitude and smart work ethic will excel over tremendous credentials and a giant intellect if those attributes are not properly applied to the business at hand.

Many of the golf and leadership books on the market are written by golf aficionados. While many can boast a low handicap, Marine is living proof of the efficacy of the thoughtful analysis and recommendations presented in What's Your Lie? Using the observations and methods outlined in this book, Marine reduced her handicap from a 30 to a 5, in just three and a half years.

Marine is a Professional Certified Coach, PCC, from the International Coaching Federation, a certified Corporate Coach from Coach University, and is also a healer and student at Barbara Brennan Healing Science School.

Lisa and Marine often use the same consulting models in their client work, having trained at the same French consulting firm. One of the fundamental precepts of this training applies a holistic approach that recognizes that issues identified in one area of a company, department, or individual's performance will likely also impact all other areas of the system in which they exist.
